The following video shows a few shots from the train carriage cubby house I built. It has a G scale LGB starter freight set running on LGB brass track. This video contains a few shots from the cubby house build process, it is not a “how to” video. The loco runs through lockable doors that open on either end of the cubby house then around a small part of the garden. Continue reading

Making lightweight fake rocks
This is a tutorial on how I carve and paint extruded polystyrene (XPS) to make cheap fake rocks for a model scene or diorama. These techniques can be used for model railways (N scale, HO scale, on30 and more) and also look great for gaming terrain such as wargaming tiles and boards. The final shots have some static grass added for extra realism. Foam rocks have an advantage over plaster moulded rocks because they are super lightweight ensuring your board or diorama doesn’t become too heavy. The technique is also cheap and only requires basic paints and tools.
Mine area update
The model railway directors present an update on the Werami N scale layout. In this update we look at the completed mine area which includes realistic rocks, weathered mine cars and vehicles, model eucalyptus trees, static grass scrub lands and the mine area itself with mine shaft, equipment and underground mine tunnel.
Realistic rocks
Rocks are an important aspect of the Werami layout so we really want to get this right. We’ve looked at hundreds of videos and tested a few approaches. The photo below shows the latest ‘realistic rock’ prototype using carved foam and acrylics. The guy standing there has been added to show rough indication of scale.
Wiring a model railway with LED lights in DC
Wiring up a model train layout in DC (direct current) is a great way to keep costs down and learn some basic electronics. We examine our wiring diagram and explain how triple pole double throw switches are used to power the trains and bipolar LEDs.
