Realistic hot glowing coals with resin

Projects

This is a coffee table with a twist - it doubles as a subtle light source with an ultra realistic glowing bed of coals that look so real you can almost feel the heat.

Using leftover hardwood skirting boards and heavy-duty C section steel for the legs, I set out to create a sturdy yet stylish piece of furniture. Planning out the layers was key, from the resin bed for the LED lights to the 65mm flat bar framing.

I experimented with silicone molds and gravel to craft a realistic coal-like appearance for the resin cast. Despite a few hiccups along the way the end result turned out pretty neat.

Originally, I had grand plans for a complex LED circuit, but after some testing, I found that a simple RGB LED strip did the trick just fine. Sometimes, simplicity wins out over complexity.
